Father Really Does Know Best

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Dad drove me to the airport
To get a rental car.
Before we left, he took a map,
Said, “This is where you are.”

He pointed to the mountains;
Said, “They will guide you, too.”
Then noted each turn on the way,
So I’d know what to do.

After he dropped us off, Josh said,
“Is gramps one of those guys
That just knows about everything?”
I said, “He’s very wise.”

But wouldn’t you just know it,
There came along a test:
I saw a sign convincing me
Another way was best.

Then pride lifted her ugly head;
Josh looked in disbelief
As I uttered the fateful words,
“He can’t know everything…”

Well, you have prob’ly guessed it -
The way I took was wrong.
The shortcut I had thought it’d be
Turned out was extra long.

So, have I learned my lesson?
I’ll guess we’ll see, next time.
But in the meantime, my thoughts turned
To God’s own grand design.

He is my Heavenly Father.
He gave me His Map, too.
And pointed out the Solid Rock
So I’ll know what to do.

But in the end, it’s up to me,
If I will follow Him;
Or let pride take control, and lead
The long way home, again.

I have God’s Word to guide me;
So next time there’s a test,
I’ve just got to remember that
My Father does know best!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways, acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV
