A Teacher’s Prayer as the School Year Begins

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

The school year is beginning, Lord,
With new names and new faces.
Soon they will sit expectantly
In their appointed places.

And I will have the privilege
And responsibility
To share with them the knowledge, Lord,
That You have given me.

Please lend me, Lord, Your wisdom,
Your compassion, and Your grace.
Help me see only gifts from You
In every child’s face.

And when they look in mine, Lord,
It’s my prayer they will see You
In every gracious word I say,
And thoughtful things I do.

And on those days, when things get rough,
Remind me, Lord, again,
That I am humbly serving You
When I am serving them.

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you,
whatever you did for one of the least of these…
you did for me.’”
Matthew 25:40 NIV
