A Word from the Coach

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

The coach looked at her players,
And said, “It will be rough,
So you and I will both know
Just what you’re really made of.

“You won’t get any better
Just resting on your strengths.
It’s time to find those weaknesses;
And we’ll go to great lengths

“To let the heat and pressure
Expose those weaker spots.
Then we will work together
To add strength where we ought.”

That’s just the way that God works!
He brings adversity
Through suffering and testing
So each of us will be

Encouraged by our victories,
And spurred on when we fail;
Not so we’ll grow discouraged,
But so we won’t grow stale.

Those times of harshest testing
Reveal where faith is weak.
But God’s right there, supplying
The added grace we seek.

And through those times of testing,
We learn that all along
God knew the heat of battle
Would help to make us strong.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,
whenever you face trials of many kinds,
 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete,
not lacking anything.”
James 1:2-4 NIV
