Dogs and Dead Things

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Why is my dog attracted to
The things that smell the worst
Like dead things ‘long the road that look
Like they’re about to burst?
You’d think the sight, alone, would make
Her run the other way.
But dogs just love that stuff, much to
Their masters’ great dismay.
As willful human beings, we
Are also sometimes drawn
To places where we should not be
And things we know are wrong.
That war sets up within us where
God’s Spirit sheds His light,
Exposing sin and darkness while
Directing toward what’s right.
It’s then the question comes – will we
Yield to His righteous lead?
Or will it be a sinful stench
To which the soul will heed?
The consequences can be harsh;
The stench can be long-lasting.
But if we’ll keep our noses clean,
The joy is far outlasting.
“I have discovered this principle of life—
that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong…
Oh, what a miserable person I am!
Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?
Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord…
So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death.
But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”
Romans 7:21,24-25, 8:6 NLT
