With a Heavy Heart

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

It’s when my heart’s too heavy even for a prayer
That Jesus whispers tenderly that He is there,
And that His shoulder’s broad enough to lean upon
As He waits with me quietly till comes the dawn.

But dawn is slow in coming, as the tears still flow.
Yet He is there beside me; and I come to know
How deep His love, how gentle His amazing grace,
And how secure I am when in His warm embrace.

And even in my deepest pain, I find His peace.
It floods my soul and gives my sorrow sweet release.
Then as I lay it all on Him, He bids me rise.
He lifts my chin so I can look into His eyes;

And there I find a love that will not let me go,
Assurance far beyond the faith I used to know,
A comfort deep within I had not found before,
And grace to heal the pain, to strengthen and restore.

For when my heart is heavy, Jesus meets me there;
And He’s a friend who’s closer even than a prayer.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our troubles…”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4a NIV
