Gates to Heaven

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

“This moment, this place, is none other than a gate into heaven.
God’s glory rains down, weighs down earth’s tented heights,
and grace tears through, ripping sky canvas and me clear open.
Everywhere windows and gates, and I did not know it.
No. I have known it and I have forgotten it and remembered it again.”
~ Ann Voskamp in One Thousand Gifts

Every moment holds a gate to Heaven.
In each moment, God holds out the key
Inviting those who would to come and join Him.
This moment, He is calling out to me.

But will I slow enough to hear His whisper;
To feel His glory pressing through my cares?
Or in my race through life will I pass by Him,
And miss the sweetness He so longed to share?

I will not let this moment slip beyond me.
But through this gate of Heaven I will run;
And find my Lord has been there, waiting for me.
I fall before my Savior, there, undone.

And yet, He lifts my face to gaze upon Him;
To drink in all the love, there, in His eyes.
Then I know that for maybe just a moment,
I’m letting go of all earth’s clinging ties;

To drink in only Heaven, and His beauty;
To worship in this high and holy place;
To think of only Him, in all His glory;
To search the depths of His amazing grace.

And then, to wonder how it is that He
Would open Heaven’s gate to one like me.

“Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said,
‘Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.’
And he was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place!
This is none other than the house of God,
and this is the gate of heaven!’”
Genesis 28:16-17 NKJV
