Getting Off the Merry-Go-Round

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

“So many times I’ve longed for my circumstances
to change while I haven’t been willing to change.”
“Making changes can be hard,
but it’s our refusal to change the places
God is asking us to change that keeps us stuck on
the dismal merry-go-round we’re
too afraid to jump off yet too sick to stay on.
We hold on tightly only to pass by the same old stuff
exactly where it was at the last time we swirled past.”
*Kelly Minter: Week 5, Day 5

God’s looking for a change in me.
So how will I respond?
Will I turn loose, if He should ask,
The things of which I’m fond –

Like old, familiar habits or
Relationships or things
That keep me stuck right where I’ve been,
Instead of growing wings?

God offers me the grace and strength
To trust Him and obey
But will not force me to let go
So I can try His way.

The carousel is spinning and
God wants my faith to show.
It’s time to test my wings but that
Requires I let go.

But I’m not scared because I’ve learned
The things I leave behind
Will make room for the greater blessings
In God’s grand design.

“The people all responded together,
‘We will do everything the Lord has said.’”
Exodus 19:8a NIV
