When God Could Have, But Didn’t

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

When God could have but He didn’t
Will my faith still be as strong?
Or will I lower expectations,
Wondering what went wrong?

If God’s arms had been longer
Could He then have saved the day?
If He had been more powerful
Could He have made a way?

If He’d just stepped in sooner would
There be no need to cry?
So here I am, left wondering
If God is Love, then why?

It’s then I hear His Spirit,
In His own tender way
Speak right into my very heart
And oh so sweetly say,

“You are my precious child, and
I could not love you more.
And what you see as failure, child,
Will be another door.

A threshold you must walk through
To reach a brand new place
Of greater faith and courage,
A stronger sense of grace.

So child, if I didn’t…
Please trust that it was best.
For I love you far more than
To give you something less.”

“Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.”
Isaiah 59:1 NIV
