A Dressing Table Named Faith and a Pickup Truck Named Grace

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

She walked into the Swap Shop,
And there, to her surprise,
A dark-stained dressing table
Stood right before her eyes.

She knew it in an instant,
Its simple store design.
Her fingers brushed the brass pulls,
Traced each familiar line.

It had been her grandmother’s,
And then was left to her;
But one night had been taken by
Some unknown plunderer.

She’d left it on the front lawn,
Too heavy to move in.
And in the morning sunlight
Had planned to try, again.

But heartache dawned with morning,
And anger, with the light.
The table had been taken
Beneath the cloak of night.

She’d put out signs that stated
The table was not free,
Nor had it been for sale, but
The thief ignored her plea.

So many years had passed since
That sad, frustrating day.
But here it was, years later…
Somebody’s throwaway.

A little worse for wear, yet
A treasure in her eyes.
But how to get it back home?
Another sweet surprise…

Her neighbor happed to be there
And said his truck had room.
He’d be glad to deliver.
It’d be home very soon.

And as she laid her head down
To go to bed that night,
She knew she had been twice blessed,
And all again was right.

For there it sat, before her.
And though she had been wronged,
Her grandma’s dressing table
Was home where it belonged.

And that’s redemption’s story:
It’s what Christ did for me.
My heart was made to love Him,
Made for eternity.

But sin’s a thief and liar.
It comes to steal away
That love meant for our Savior,
The joy, the peace, the faith.

But Grace steps in and offers
A way back for the soul,
Restoring what was taken,
Paying redemption’s toll.

And all is then made right again,
When we receive, by faith,
The gift of God…salvation,
Through His amazing grace.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—
and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - “
Ephesians 2:8 NIV

Thanks, Marcie! I'm so glad you stopped by Lifting My Eyes, and were blessed. There's just so much the Lord can teach us through every day circumstances. And I love to share those lessons through poetry. Looking forward to seeing more of you here, and at Christian Poets and Writers. God bless!
