Get Me Behind Me

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

God, get me out of my own way;
So when I come to You and pray
It won’t be my own will I seek,
But Yours, instead, my lips would speak.

For though the things that I may ask
Seem good to me, I’ve learned, at last,
They may not be how You would bless.
And Lord, I’ve learned Your way is best.

So take my self out of the way.
I yield it, Lord, to You this day.
Fill me, I pray, with thoughts from You
So what I pray is what You’ll do.

“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be Your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.’”
Matthew 6:9-10 NIV (emphasis mine)
