The World or The Way

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Your destiny is yours to choose –
If you would gain this world, you’ll lose
A life beyond this earthen sod,
A home in Heaven above, with God;
And find, instead, you’ve traded for
Some comfort on this earthly shore
With temporary wealth or fame,
A fleeting joy, a fading name;
And in the end, no life at all
Apart from God, ‘neath Satan’s pall.
But if, instead, you take your cross,
And count this world as only dross,
Follow Christ, and bear His name
Then you will find eternal gain
In trials that draw you to His side,
And blessings that He will provide;
Then, in the end…a crown to give
Back to the One for whom you live.
Christ cautions us to count the cost
Then join Him daily, ‘neath our cross.
“Then Jesus said to His disciples,
‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself,
and take up his cross and follow Me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it;
but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world
and forfeits his soul?’”
Matthew 16:24-26a NASB
