A Hand to Hold through the Storm

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Last night, the wind was howling,
Which meant my dog was, too.
And I knew from experience
Just what I had to do.
I gathered up my pillows,
Then headed down the stairs.
And when I reached the last step,
My trembling dog was there.
I lay down on the couch, and
She lay down close beside.
And with my hand upon her,
I felt her fear subside.
I hadn’t stopped the wind storm.
But she knew I was near.
And that was all she needed
To quickly calm her fear.
Sometimes our storms are like that –
God doesn’t take away
The trial we are going through,
Though that is what we pray.
Instead, He moves in closer
And takes us by the hand,
So we will know He’s with us, and
It’s all within His plan.
Then even though the winds howl,
We’ve strength to make it through
Just knowing God is by our side,
Upholding me and you.
“When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
    the flames will not set you ablaze.”
Isaiah 43:2 NIV
