God’s Custom House

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

A custom house, built deftly, stone by stone,
Its sure foundation, Jesus Christ, alone,
Is what my Savior wants to make of me;
A living temple, standing by the sea.
And though surrounded by encroaching tides
Of worldly charms and Satan’s cunning lies,
That holy temple won’t erode away
As God remains its keeper, day by day.
For only in His strength, alone, it stands;
The tides held back by His almighty hands.
And storms that lash against it are controlled
Within the mighty Master’s careful hold.
And windows set about on every side
Allow the light of Christ to there abide;
And, too, reflect that Son, for all to see
His holiness, His grace, and majesty.
A house not made by hands, but by God’s grace:
May it be fit for Him, a dwelling place.
“you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house,
a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
