Closer Than a Breath

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

(inspired by this quote from E. Stanley Jones, quoted by Jennifer Kennedy Dean*)

“[God] was closer than the blood in their veins
and nearer than their own heartbeats.
If they should reach out to touch Him,
they would reach too far.”

If I should pray, but do not hear,
And wonder where You are –
Then reach my hand to touch You, Lord,
I will have reached too far.

For You are closer than a breath;
Than bone beneath my skin.
You’re closer than my nearest thought.
Where You end, I begin.

For You’re at work within me, Lord;
Your thoughts becoming mine.
My hands and feet move as You bid,
My will yielded to Thine.

So Lord, as You abide in me
And I, as well, in You,
Then what I seek will only be
The things You want me to.

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you,
you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
John 15:7 NKJV

You're so right about little changes. They're especially significant when the Lord is prompting us to make them. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Blessings! Lisa
