The Smell of Flesh

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

“but each person is tempted when they are
dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;
and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
James 1:14-15 NIV

When you entertain sin in your life,
“the enemy smells your flesh!”
~my friend, Karen Olthaus

The smell of flesh is on me,
For I’ve been entertaining sin.
And Satan’s on the prowl;
That odor’s just inviting him.

He’ll gladly take my weakness –
Exploit it, till I am ensnared;
And all because I gave in,
And let my flesh leave my heart bared.

Oh Father, please forgive me!
Please take away my sinful pride,
And cleanse my broken spirit.
Restore my heart; renew my mind.

And help me, Father, next time
My flesh would have the best of me,
To scorn that roaring lion,
And listen Lord, instead, to Thee.

“Be alert and of sober mind.
Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.”
1 Peter 5:8 NIV
