It’s Not a Matter of Give and Take

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

The world says love is give and take;
But God says love is give, and give again.
And only take when it’s to lift
A care or burden from a weary friend.

For love that comes from God is kind,
And does not let itself become concerned
With how its kindness is received,
Or whether it will be loved in return.

And even when it’s wronged, God’s love
Will keep no record of what’s in the past;
But will, instead, believe and hope,
And persevere, with faith that is steadfast.

So let us strive to love in ways
That bring us opportunities to give.
For that is how our Savior loves,
And wants us, as His ransomed ones, to live.

“This is how God showed his love among us:
He sent his one and only Son into the world
that we might live through him. This is love:
not that we loved God, but that he loved us
and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Dear friends, since God so loved us,
we also ought to love one another…
if we love one another, God lives in us
and his love is made complete in us.”
1 John 4:9-12 NIV
