Where Do We Go from Here?

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Satan loves to cause division;
It’s his great delight –
Coaxing us to take up sides, and say,
“You’re wrong! I’m right!”
But Jesus’ great desire is that
We’d all be one, in Him.
He came to give us all great hope
Of joy and peace within.
The peace He offers goes beyond
What we can understand;
And spreads from heart to heart as we
Start joining hand in hand.
Our enemy will not let up.
He’ll battle all the more
To keep us in our corners ‘cause
He’s out to win the war.
But with the love of Christ in us,
We can begin to mend
A country that’s been torn apart.
But only if we’ll bend
Our stiffened knees, first to the Lord,
In humble gratitude;
Then serve each other, as He did,
That hope might be renewed.
“…if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have given you an example that you also
should do just as I have done for you.
… Love one another. Just as I have loved you,
you must also love one another.”
John 13:14,34 HCSB

Just Try and Stop It

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

“You can chain up every Christian on the planet
but God’s Word cannot be chained…
Build a wall – He’ll walk right through it.
Pour a moat and He’ll walk on top of it.
Block Him with a mountain
and He’ll command it to move.”
*Beth Moore
“This is my gospel, for which I am suffering
even to the point of being chained like a criminal.
But God’s word is not chained.”
2 Timothy 2:8b-9 NIV
Some may think, through threats and chains,
That they can bind God’s Holy Word
And keep its truth and power from spreading.
Well, must be they haven’t heard…

Build a wall? He’ll walk right through it,
Like He did the lions’ den.
Pour a moat? He walks on water.
Did it once, and can again.

Throw a mountain in His path?
He’ll simply tell the thing to move.
He can do whatever it takes
To get His Word to me and you,

And to a world in desperate need
Of its transforming power to save.
No, it’s not chained.   God’s Word is free
To live and move in hearts, today.

“so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Isaiah 55:11 NIV

Pink is spreading through the sky.
The morning’s finally come and I,
Through tears of joy, welcome the dawn.
For night has been both hard and long.
But with the rising of the sun
Comes joy in what my God has done,
As He walked with me through the black
Of darkest night, and drew me back
To greet the new day, in its grace,
With greater peace and growing faith
From all I learned that long, cold night –
To walk by faith, and not by sight.
Your Word says joy comes with the dawn.
Lord, here we are. You were not wrong;
For greater joy I’ve never known,
But found, at last, in You alone.
“Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning”
Psalm 30:5b NKJV

“We can’t be overcomers if we act under-graced.
God’s astonishing favor is meant to run like a river through
every artery of our lives, but, by His sovereign plan,
His unhindered access requires a cooperative process.”
*Beth Moore
How can we be overcomers
If we’re acting under-graced?
God supplies all that we need
To fight the battle, win the race.
His grace is flowing beyond measure –
All-sufficient, full and free,
Never bound by short supply;
Yet limited by you and me.
He needs our full cooperation –
Humble, broken, yielded hearts
For His grace to transform us
Into the ones He’s set apart.
Then we can be overcomers,
His grace coursing through our veins -
Flowing with transforming power,
Love that lifts, strength that sustains.
“And God is able to bless you abundantly,
so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,
you will abound in every good work.”
2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV

Stretch Marks

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

“God pulled, prodded, and elasticized my faith
until it had stretch marks.”*
“You don’t live this kind of life accidentally.
You make up your mind who you want to be
and daily die to the rest. You surrender yourself
to living in the tension where you’ll always be stretched…”**
~Beth Moore
Lord, stretch me till the stretch marks start to show.
For then, without a doubt, Lord, I will know
That my faith’s ever growing, as I see
The way that you keep working, Lord, in me.
And as You pull, and prod, and stretch my faith,
I’m learning that You also send the grace
To bear the strain that stretching may impart
Upon an ever-growing, yielded heart.
So stretch me, Lord. Make my faith ever new,
As I live out an active faith, in You;
Where every day, Your busy hand I see
Not resting, Lord, but beckoning to me.
“Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit,
let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads
or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives.”
Galatians 5:25 The Message
