When Footprints Tell Only Half the Story

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Satan, that Accuser, stood
Before the Lord one day
To make a claim against God’s child –
Said she’d wandered away.

He felt quite sure that he was right
From looking at the road
And seeing only Jesus’ prints…
No signs that one had followed.

But Jesus simply smiled
As He pointed down the lane.
And Satan’s voice was silenced by
The scene that now was plain.

For in the distance he now saw
The one he’d thought was lost
Walking along the narrow way
While carrying her cross.

And with each careful step she took,
As she placed each foot down,
She stepped only into the prints
Already on the ground.

For she would only step where Jesus’
Feet had gone before.
She hadn’t strayed. Instead she’d traced
The steps of her dear Lord.

And as the Devil turned away,
The Lord looked back again,
And smiled as her footprints fell
In perfect step with Him.

“…the kingdom of our God
and the authority of His Messiah
have now come, because the accuser
of our brothers has been thrown out:
the one who accuses them
before our God day and night.”
Revelation 12:10 HCSB

An Empty Chair on Father’s Day

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

For my friends who are missing their dads
and husbands this Father’s Day

It’s nearly Father’s Day, and I
Glance toward his empty chair
And close my eyes, imagining
He once again is there.

I hear that old, familiar voice.
I see his crooked smile.
And tears begin to trickle as
I linger there, awhile.

I would not wish him back, for I
Know he’s at Home with You.
But Lord, You know I miss him so…
It’s hard to make it through

This day when others celebrate
The daddies in their lives.
I feel as if a glimpse of him
Would help me just survive.

Then Lord, You gently gather me
In Your own sweet embrace,
Reminding me that You are here
To lend Your strength and grace;

To be a Husband and a Father
Till You bring me Home
Where I’ll be held by both of you –
Never again alone.

But until then, please hug him tight
And whisper tenderly
This message: Happy Father’s Day…
I miss you so. Love, me.

“God in His holy dwelling is
a father of the fatherless
and a champion of widows.”
Psalm 68:5 HCSB

Sit Here Awhile With Me

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Sit here awhile with Me –
And learn, within the quietness of your soul,
What you, in Heaven’s plan, were meant to be.

Sit here, without a thought
        To what lies just beyond this secret place;
What battles lie ahead, that must be fought.

Sit here, and I will be
        To you a stream within a barren land;
The manna that will satisfy your need.

Sit here awhile with Me…
                                Sit patiently.

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage,
and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the LORD.”
Psalm 27:14

Take It to Jesus

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

“Come to Me, all of you
who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 HCSB

Today you’re facing disappointment,
Fear, or pain, or loss.
God says, “Remember, child,
You can bring them to My cross

And let them there be crucified,
As you have been, with me.
I’ll take them from you, there, and cast them
In the deepest sea."

Then as He lifts your burden,
You will find a sweet release,
As He replaces all your cares
With His abiding peace.

“casting all your care on Him,
because He cares about you.”
1 Peter 5:7 HCSB

Which Voice, One Choice

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

There are 3 little voices in my head.
I mustn’t heed them all; but must instead
Learn to discern which one is simply mine,
Which is the enemy, which one Divine.

One leads me to my own selfish desires.
One promises the world, but then soon tires
Of fleeting fun, and leaves me searching for
Illusive joy and peace…for something more.

That Something is the voice so small and still
I must surrender heart, and soul, and will
To hear it’s wisdom speaking soft to me,
Above my self, above the enemy.

He never draws my heart closer to sin.
Instead, He calls me closer still to Him;
So close that there’s no room for even me
Apart from Him – that’s how it’s meant to be.

So when I hear a voice drawing me near,
I’ll wait until its message becomes clear.
I’ll seek my Savior’s face, and I will pray.
And when I know it’s God’s voice… I’ll obey.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit,
but test the spirits to determine if they are from God,”
1 John 4:1a HCSB
