Can I Trust You with My Heart?

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Can I trust You with my heart?
Can the very hands that hold the universe together,
That spin the earth, and calm the sea;
That paint a rainbow-sunset over the mountains,
And guide the soaring eagle to her nest;
Can those same omnipotent hands tenderly surround my heart,
Covering the anxious beats with an overwhelming peace?

Only You possess such peace.
Only You possess such a love that engulfs
My worry-weary soul and says, “enough,
All is well…rest in Me.”
Yes…I can trust you.
Take my heart,
And keep it close to Yours.

“Then you will experience God’s peace,
which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace
will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:7 NLT

Spirit-Call

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Spirit-breath of God
whispering to me
as a gentle breeze
moving through the pines
stirring my heart with
wild anticipation
to sense that once familiar rhythm
a knowing deep within
that says
He is close
and I am His
and it is time
to take His hand
and follow
once again

and though I cannot see Him
I can see
the bending of the boughs
before me
as His Spirit moves
like the wind
leading the way
whispering on the breeze
come
follow me

“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed
when God called him to leave home
and go to another land that God
would give him as his inheritance.
He went without knowing
where he was going.”
Hebrews 11:8 NLT

40-Something

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

I’m losing my eyesight, and losing my hair;
I’m losing my mind; it’s all gone – who knows where.
And then I am gaining things I’d rather not;
Such as age spots, and wrinkles, and weight…who’d have thought!

Thank goodness there’s something that’s always the same;
It’s my Savior and friend; Jesus Christ is His name!
In this world of uncertainty, I’m glad to know
I have someone like Him, to whom I can still go.

Doesn’t matter what stage of life I’m going through,
He is always the same; His Word says that it’s true.
So I’ll just hang on for this ride we call life;
And will try not to stress ‘bout the changes in sight.

But I’ll focus, instead, on my Heavenly Friend,
Who’s as constant and true, as He always has been.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Deep Down

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

Lord, there is a place in me
That even I don’t know;
A place that’s buried so deep down,
I didn’t want to go.

But if You want to use me, Lord,
As now I know You do;
Then, Lord, I’ll place my hand in Yours,
And search my heart with You.

Then whatever we find there, Lord,
I’ll place within Your hands;
To do with what You want to do,
For now I understand

That I’ve been holding back a little
Piece, Lord, just for me.
Now I want You to have it,
So I can be fully free

To lay my life before You;
Open to Your holy will.
Please take me now, and use me;
For my heart is clean and still.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart:
try me, and know my thoughts”
Psalm 139:23

When My Father Calls

Written by Lisa DeVinney on . Posted in poetry

(a prayer response to Habakkuk 1:12)

“Lord, are you not from everlasting?
My God, my Holy One…my Rock”
Habakkuk 1:12a NIV

How awesome it is, Lord, that You
Bend down to where I am
And speak to me so tenderly,
Just like Your little lamb,

Reminding me that You are holy,
Righteous, just, and pure.
And that You are the Rock on which
My hope is made secure.

How could I not then answer when
Your voice calls out my name?
I will not doubt if You should call,
But now with boldness claim

My place within Your family as
A child of the King.
I’ll come to you expectantly,
Not fearing anything.

For when I hear the voice of my
Great Shepherd, King, and Lord,
I’ll answer as a child who’s loved,
And chosen, and adored.
